I make a lot of our personal care products myself. It usually saves me money and I know that it’s natural and chemical free. One product I’ve always been nervous about making myself is makeup. I was waiting for my current supply of makeup to run out and then replace it with natural products. But my eye shadow and mascara started to irritate my eyes, so I had to throw it out. I started looking for natural products to replace them, and then I saw pricing! I simply can’t afford it, so I knew it was time to bite the bullet and figure out how to make my own.
Finding a Recipe
There are many recipes for homemade makeup, including mascara, on the web. I read through several of them and didn’t like any of them. Most of them are oil based, which tends to run, especially in the heat. Several of them also had beeswax and required melting down on the stove. Honestly, that was too complicated for me. I just wanted a simple recipe. I did find one I liked, but it was water based and I was worried about the possibility of bacteria. So I took the elements I liked from each recipe and came up with my own.Try my DIY oil free mascara that doesn't run and costs pennies on the dollar compared to buying natural makeup.Click To Tweet
How to Do It
The first thing you’ll need is a container. I used my old mascara tube. Cleaning it out was the hardest part of the process. It helped to remove the little rubber ring in the top with tweezers. Then I could soak all the pieces in warm water.
Next you need to gather your ingredients. You’ll need bentonite clay, activated charcoal, aloe vera gel, and witch hazel. You can also add essential oils if you like. Tea tree oil is a great choice to prevent bacteria. The bentonite clay hardens, which keeps the mascara from running. Activated charcoal gives the mascara its color. I break open 3-4 capsules, depending on how dark I want it to be. Aloe vera gel and witch hazel give it a nice texture. And witch hazel also prevents buildup of bacteria.
The process is super simple. Just mix all of your ingredients until well blended. Don’t use metal, as this will affect the properties of the clay. Once mixed, you can put the mascara in your container. It can be difficult to get it in a mascara tube. I used a medicine dropper to get it in the tube.
And voila! DIY natural mascara that is oil free and won’t run.
DIY Clay Mascara
- 1 tsp bentonite clay
- 3-4 capsules activated charcoal
- 1 tsp aloe vera gel
- 2 tsp witch hazel
- container, such as an old mascara tube
Combine all ingredients and mix thoroughly. Do not use metal, as this can affect the properties of the clay.
Store in your container. If you use an old mascara tube, putting it into a medicine dropper makes it easier to get in the tube.
Once I made up this mascara, I couldn’t wait to try it. I was amazed at how much I loved it. It doesn’t run, I don’t need to reapply during the day, and I have never had a problem with clumps.
I’m happy to make a natural makeup that costs pennies on the dollar compared to buying it. I can’t wait to try making other makeup!
